Dental care at every stage of your child's growth

Different ages have different dental needs. Here’s what to expect at each stage.

Age 0–1 Year: The First Tooth

Most babies get their first tooth between 6–10 months. Schedule your child's first dental visit by their first birthday — even if no teeth are visible yet. During this visit, Dr. Rachha will: examine the mouth for any developmental concerns, demonstrate how to clean the gums and first teeth, counsel you on feeding habits (prolonged bottle feeding is a major cause of early childhood caries), advise on fluoride needs, and check for lip/tongue tie which can affect feeding and speech.

Age 1–3 Years: Building Good Habits

By age 3, most children have all 20 primary (baby) teeth. This is the highest-risk period for early childhood caries (ECC) — also called 'baby bottle tooth decay'. Avoid putting children to bed with milk bottles, limit juice to mealtimes, and begin using a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Watch for white or brown spots on teeth — the earliest signs of decay. Schedule checkups every 6 months. This is also the time to address thumb sucking and pacifier habits, which should stop by age 3 to prevent jaw misalignment.

Age 3–6 Years: First Dental X-Rays and Sealants

At ages 3–4, Dr. Rachha will take the first dental X-rays to check for cavities between teeth that cannot be seen visually. Around age 6, the first permanent molars erupt (the '6-year molars') — these are the most important teeth in the mouth and should receive sealants as soon as they fully erupt. This is also the optimal age window to begin myofunctional orthodontic evaluation if your child breathes through the mouth, snores, or has crowded primary teeth.

Age 6–12 Years: Mixed Dentition and Orthodontic Watch

Between ages 6–12, children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth — this is called mixed dentition. Baby teeth fall out in a predictable sequence; if any fall out early, space maintainers may be needed. Permanent teeth erupt larger than the space available — this is normal and resolves as the jaw grows, but needs monitoring. Orthodontic issues (crowding, crossbite, underbite) are most effectively treated during this period when the jaw is still growing and responsive to guidance appliances. Athletic children should wear custom mouthguards for contact sports.

Age 12–18 Years: Permanent Dentition and Teenage Care

By age 12–13, most permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth) have erupted. This is the most common age for conventional orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign Teen. Wisdom teeth begin developing around age 17–18 and should be monitored with OPG X-ray to assess their position and whether removal will be needed. Teenagers often experience increased cavity risk due to dietary changes (more sugary snacks and beverages) and sometimes reduced oral hygiene as they become more independent. Reinforce twice-daily brushing and 6-monthly dental visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing the best pediatric dentist for your child depends on various factors, including recommendations, reviews, and personal preferences. Dr. Swapnil Rachha at Soulful Dental Care is recognized as a pediatric dentist in Pune, and you may consider consulting with him for your child's dental needs.

The first dental visit should happen by your child's first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. Early visits help Dr. Rachha establish a baseline, spot any early decay or developmental concerns, and build a positive dental relationship with your child before any problems arise. Starting early is the single best thing parents can do for long-term oral health.

Yes, pediatric dentists undergo additional training beyond general dentistry to specialize in treating infants, children, and adolescents. They focus on child psychology, growth, and development, making them well-equipped to address the unique dental needs of young patients.

A pedodontist (pediatric dentist) holds an MDS degree with 3 additional years of postgraduate specialization in children's dentistry beyond a BDS. They are trained in child behavior management, psychology, growth and development of milk and permanent teeth, sedation techniques for children, and treatment of children with special healthcare needs. Dr. Swapnil Rachha at Soulful Dental is a qualified MDS Pedodontist — not just a general dentist treating children.

Yes — nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the safest, most widely used sedation option for children worldwide. It takes effect within minutes, keeps the child conscious and cooperative, and wears off completely within 5 minutes of stopping. Dr. Rachha is sedation-certified and monitors every child throughout the procedure. Oral sedation is also available for more anxious children, under strict monitoring. Both methods have an excellent safety record when administered by trained specialists.

Milk teeth must be preserved whenever possible. They hold space for permanent teeth — early extraction causes neighboring teeth to shift, leading to crowded or misaligned permanent teeth later. They also help your child chew, speak clearly, and maintain jaw bone density. When a baby tooth has deep decay or infection, we treat it with pulpectomy (baby root canal) followed by a crown, preserving it until it falls out naturally. Extraction is only chosen as a last resort.

Pulpectomy is the pediatric equivalent of a root canal — it removes infected pulp tissue from the tooth's interior, cleans the canal, fills it with a resorbable material, and restores the tooth with a crown. It sounds scary but with local anaesthesia and/or nitrous oxide sedation, children feel no pain during the procedure. Most kids are surprised at how easy it was. The alternative — leaving an infected tooth — is far more painful and can affect the permanent tooth developing beneath it.

A basic checkup and cleaning starts at ₹500–₹1,000. Fillings begin from ₹800, fluoride treatment from ₹500, and dental sealants from ₹600 per tooth. More complex treatments like crowns range from ₹2,500–₹7,000 and sedation from ₹1,500 per session. We provide transparent cost estimates before any treatment begins — no surprises. Most treatments for children cost significantly less than equivalent adult treatments.

A dental sealant is a thin, protective plastic coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars) where cavities most commonly form. Children aged 6–14 benefit most from sealants because their newly erupted permanent molars have deep grooves that are hard to clean. Sealants seal those grooves, preventing bacteria from settling in. Studies show sealants reduce the risk of decay in molars by up to 80%. The procedure is completely painless, takes 5 minutes per tooth, and requires no drilling.

Cavities are caused by bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) that feed on sugar and produce acids which dissolve tooth enamel. Key risk factors in children: frequent sugary snacks or drinks, bottle feeding with milk/juice at bedtime, mouth breathing, poor brushing technique, and genetics. Prevention: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, limit sugary foods between meals, avoid bedtime bottle feeding, drink water (not juice) between meals, visit Soulful Dental every 6 months for fluoride treatments and professional cleaning.

Myofunctional orthodontics is an early intervention approach that corrects the underlying causes of crooked teeth and jaw misalignment — such as mouth breathing, tongue posture, and incorrect swallowing patterns — using removable functional appliances rather than fixed metal braces. It is most effective between ages 4–14 when the jaw is still growing. By correcting the root cause early, it often eliminates or reduces the need for conventional braces later. Dr. Rachha is one of the few dentists in Pune offering dedicated myofunctional orthodontic treatment.

We strongly recommend booking an appointment to ensure Dr. Rachha's full attention and minimize your child's waiting time. However, for genuine dental emergencies we do our best to accommodate walk-in pati

How often should my child visit the dentist?

ents on the same day. Call us first at +91 90229 20992 or +91 94050 45454 and we will advise you on the fastest way to be seen. Our clinic is open Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 9 PM.

Every 6 months — twice a year — is the standard recommendation for children with healthy teeth. Children at higher risk of cavities (history of decay, high sugar diet, braces) may need visits every 3–4 months. Regular visits allow us to apply fluoride, check for early cavities (which are painless and invisible to parents), monitor jaw and tooth development, and give you updated guidance as your child grows. Prevention is always cheaper and less stressful than treatment.
