Different ages have different dental needs. Here’s what to expect at each stage.
Age 0–1 Year: The First Tooth
Most babies get their first tooth between 6–10 months. Schedule your child's first dental visit by their first birthday — even if no teeth are visible yet. During this visit, Dr. Rachha will: examine the mouth for any developmental concerns, demonstrate how to clean the gums and first teeth, counsel you on feeding habits (prolonged bottle feeding is a major cause of early childhood caries), advise on fluoride needs, and check for lip/tongue tie which can affect feeding and speech.
Age 1–3 Years: Building Good Habits
By age 3, most children have all 20 primary (baby) teeth. This is the highest-risk period for early childhood caries (ECC) — also called 'baby bottle tooth decay'. Avoid putting children to bed with milk bottles, limit juice to mealtimes, and begin using a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Watch for white or brown spots on teeth — the earliest signs of decay. Schedule checkups every 6 months. This is also the time to address thumb sucking and pacifier habits, which should stop by age 3 to prevent jaw misalignment.
Age 3–6 Years: First Dental X-Rays and Sealants
At ages 3–4, Dr. Rachha will take the first dental X-rays to check for cavities between teeth that cannot be seen visually. Around age 6, the first permanent molars erupt (the '6-year molars') — these are the most important teeth in the mouth and should receive sealants as soon as they fully erupt. This is also the optimal age window to begin myofunctional orthodontic evaluation if your child breathes through the mouth, snores, or has crowded primary teeth.
Age 6–12 Years: Mixed Dentition and Orthodontic Watch
Between ages 6–12, children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth — this is called mixed dentition. Baby teeth fall out in a predictable sequence; if any fall out early, space maintainers may be needed. Permanent teeth erupt larger than the space available — this is normal and resolves as the jaw grows, but needs monitoring. Orthodontic issues (crowding, crossbite, underbite) are most effectively treated during this period when the jaw is still growing and responsive to guidance appliances. Athletic children should wear custom mouthguards for contact sports.
Age 12–18 Years: Permanent Dentition and Teenage Care
